Basketball Passing Drills

Great offense moves the ball faster than the defense can shift, and that starts with clean, confident passing. These drills groove accurate chest and bounce passes, the timing of the give-and-go, and the crisp ball movement that turns a good look into a great one.

How to coach passing

Teach the pass and the catch together. The passer steps towards the target and snaps the wrists, finishing thumbs down on a chest pass. On a bounce pass, aim about two thirds of the way to the receiver so it arrives at waist height. The receiver shows a target hand, meets the pass instead of waiting for it, and catches in a triple-threat position, ready to shoot, pass or drive. Then add timing: the ball should arrive as the teammate comes open, which means reading the cut instead of reacting late. Coach players to use a pass fake to move the defense before making the real pass.

Which passing drill to run, and when

Star passing and 4-corner passing groove accuracy, footwork and communication with the ball constantly moving; both make strong warm-ups and scale from beginners to varsity by adding a second ball. The 3-man weave adds passing on the run, filling lanes and a finish at full speed. Once those are clean, move to passing against defenders, for example 3v2 keep-away in a half court, so players learn to pass away from pressure instead of just to the open teammate.

Frequently asked questions

What are the basic types of basketball passes?

The chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass are the foundation. After those come the one-hand push pass, the baseball pass for long outlets, and the wrap-around pass for getting past a defender.

How do you improve passing in youth basketball?

Keep distances short, insist on stepping into the pass and showing a target hand, and use continuous drills like star passing so players make lots of passes. Add a defender once the technique holds up.

Is the 3-man weave still worth running?

Yes, as a warm-up for passing on the move, filling lanes and finishing at speed. Pair it with a decision-making drill like 3v2 so players also practise reading defenders in transition.
