# Volleyball Drills

Volleyball rewards reps with a purpose: a pass that lands on target, a serve into a chosen zone, an approach that arrives on time. These drills cover every core skill, from the butterfly drill that trains serving and passing together to pepper for ball control and a defense drill that trains reading the hitter, plus a full beginner session that puts them in order.

## Volleyball drills drills

- [Butterfly Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/butterfly-drill.md) — Drill: Build serve-receive passing to a target under realistic serving, while training accurate serving and keeping a large group active with minimal standing time.
- [Volleyball Passing Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/passing-drill.md) — Drill: Develop a stable forearm platform, teach passers to angle the ball to the setter's spot from any part of the back court, and measure serve-receive quality with a simple pass rating.
- [Volleyball Serving Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/serving-drill.md) — Drill: Build a consistent toss and contact point, teach the float and topspin serve, and train players to serve to specific zones rather than just over the net.
- [Volleyball Hitting Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/hitting-drill.md) — Drill: Build a timed, repeatable approach and a full arm swing, then train hitters to attack a set from zone 4 with deliberate shot choices.
- [Volleyball Defense Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/digging-drill.md) — Drill: Teach perimeter defense positioning against an outside attack, train players to read the hitter's approach and arm, and dig hard-driven balls high to the middle of the court.
- [Pepper Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/pepper-drill.md) — Drill: Build ball control on all three contacts by keeping a controlled dig-set-hit rally going between partners, while training diggers to read the hitter and hitters to place the ball.
- [Beginner Volleyball Practice Plan](https://www.coachboard.app/library/volleyball/beginner-practice-plan.md) — Training Session: Build a platform pass, a basic overhead set, a legal underhand or overhand serve and a three-step approach, then link them in a rally game that rewards three contacts.

## How to plan a volleyball practice

Build practice from control to game speed. Start with a warm-up that already uses the ball, like pepper, then spend the next block on passing and serving, because serve-receive decides most rallies. Move on to setting and hitting, then defense, and finish with a game that rewards the skill you worked on. Keep every player touching the ball: split into small groups and courts rather than long lines, and change drills every ten to fifteen minutes. Write the plan down with times and share it with assistants so each station is ready before players arrive.

## Which drills matter most for beginners

Beginners need passing first. A forearm pass to a target is the skill that makes every other part of the game possible, so give it the most time. Next comes an underhand or float serve they can land in bounds, then basic setting to a target. Add hitting once players can pass and set consistently, starting from a toss rather than a live set. Keep drills short, count successful reps out loud, and let players see the court positions for each drill on a diagram before they start.

## FAQ

**What are the best volleyball drills for beginners?**

Partner passing to a target, pepper, the butterfly drill and a simple serving game cover the core skills. Keep each drill short, count successful reps, and move to game-like drills once players can control the ball.

**What is the butterfly drill in volleyball?**

A continuous serve, pass and set drill. A server serves to a passer, who passes to a target at the net, and every player then follows the ball to the next line. It trains serving, passing and movement together with lots of reps.

**How long should a volleyball practice be?**

Most youth and school practices run 90 minutes to two hours. Timed blocks for warm-up, skills, team play and a closing game keep the session focused.
