# Linebacker Drill — American Football Drill

The read-step-fill linebacker drill trains an American football linebacker to read his key at the snap, take one controlled step, then fill downhill or scrape to the correct gap and take on the blocker.

Most missed tackles by linebackers start before contact. The player reads late, takes a false step backward, and arrives at the gap after the ball carrier. This drill isolates those first two seconds: the key, the read step and the path to the gap, with contact added only once the footwork is clean.

It works for any front because the rules are the same whether you play a 4-3 or a 3-4. The linebacker keys the guard for run or pass and the backfield for direction, then fills his assigned gap with his outside arm free. Run it early in the week with low contact and add live reads as players improve.

## Objective

Build fast, disciplined linebacker reads and paths: a short read step, the correct fill or scrape, a strong block take-on and a proper pursuit angle.

## Setup

- **Area:** A 10x10-yard box with cones marking the A, B and C gaps on each side
- **Players:** 1–3 linebackers at a time, a coach or scout QB, a running back and two offensive linemen or players holding shields
- **Equipment:** 6 cones or bags to mark gaps, 2–3 hand shields, 1 ball
- **Duration:** 10–12 minutes
- **Level:** all-levels (U12+)

## How it works

1. **Align and key** — The linebacker aligns 4–5 yards off the ball, feet shoulder-width, weight on the balls of his feet. His eyes go through the guard in front of him to the running back: the guard tells him run or pass, and the back's first step tells him direction.
2. **Take the read step** — At the snap, he takes a short, flat step of about six inches with the foot on the side of flow, keeping his shoulders square. No backward step. If the guard pops up to pass protect, he opens to his drop; if the guard fires out, it is run.
3. **Fill downhill** — When the back attacks the linebacker's gap, he attacks downhill through it immediately, meeting the ball carrier at or behind the line. The coach points to a gap cone before each rep so players know their responsibility, then changes it.
4. **Scrape over the top** — When flow goes away or outside, the linebacker shuffles and then runs laterally behind the line, staying one yard behind his defensive line so he does not get caught in traffic. He looks for the cutback and fills the first open gap to the ball.
5. **Take on the block** — A lineman or shield holder steps up to the linebacker. He strikes with both hands inside on the blocker's chest, keeping his outside arm and leg free. He must not run around the block into the wrong gap; he squeezes it and sheds when the ball declares.
6. **Finish with a pursuit angle** — After the shed, the linebacker takes an inside-out angle to the ball carrier's near hip, aiming for a point in front of him rather than where he is now. Finish with a thud form tackle or a wrap and release, depending on the day's contact level.

## Coaching points

- Eyes first, feet second: a linebacker who moves before he has read the guard will take false steps against play-action and misdirection.
- Keep the pads low and the shoulders square during the scrape so the player can plant and fill downhill in one step.
- Hands strike first on every block; leading with the helmet is both unsafe and illegal, and it leaves the linebacker stuck on the blocker.
- Pursuit angles get deeper as the ball gets wider, because a flat angle to a fast back becomes a missed tackle at the sideline.

## Variations

- **Mirror read** — Two linebackers work side by side off one back. On each snap they must fill complementary gaps, teaching communication and the difference between the playside and backside linebacker's responsibilities.
- **Pass-read add-on** — The guard sometimes sets for pass. The linebacker opens and drops to a hook landmark 10–12 yards deep while watching the QB's eyes, then breaks on a thrown ball, so run and pass reads come from the same key.

## Build it in Coach Board

Place the linebacker, two linemen and the back on a Coach Board American football field and animate each read: a downhill fill, a scrape, and a pass drop. Duplicate the board per gap assignment, loop the first second in slow motion so players see what the guard and back do before they move, and share the links with your linebacker group before practice.

## FAQ

### What should a linebacker read first?

Most programs teach linebackers to read the guard in front of them first, then the running back. The guard shows run or pass, since he fires out on runs and pops up on passes. The back's first step and path show where the play is going, so the linebacker knows whether to fill or scrape.

### How do you stop linebackers from false stepping?

Drill a short, flat read step at the snap, around six inches toward flow, and forbid any backward movement. Start rep one at walking pace with the key moving slowly, then speed up. Film or animate the first step so players can see a false step, which often costs a full yard.
