# American Football Drills

Drills are where a playbook turns into habits. These pages cover the fundamentals every defense depends on, from a safe tackling progression and a modern, controlled Oklahoma drill to a linebacker read-and-fill drill, plus a timed youth practice plan that fits the individual, group and team periods into one session.

## American Football drills drills

- [Tackling Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/american-football/tackling-drill.md) — Drill: Build a safe, repeatable tackle with the head up and out of contact, leading with the shoulder, wrapping at the hips and finishing on the ground under control.
- [Oklahoma Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/american-football/oklahoma-drill.md) — Drill: Teach blockers to fit and drive, defenders to shed a block with proper hand placement, and both to finish with safe, shoulder-led contact under close supervision.
- [Linebacker Drill](https://www.coachboard.app/library/american-football/linebacker-drill.md) — Drill: Build fast, disciplined linebacker reads and paths: a short read step, the correct fill or scrape, a strong block take-on and a proper pursuit angle.
- [Youth Practice Plan](https://www.coachboard.app/library/american-football/youth-practice-plan.md) — Training Session: Run a structured, safe 90-minute youth practice that maximises reps per player, installs a few simple plays, and ends with players wanting to come back.

## How to plan drills into practice

Split practice into periods and give each drill a clear home: fundamentals early while players are fresh, group work next, team period last. Keep individual drills short, around eight to twelve minutes, with enough lines that nobody stands for long. Pick drills that look like the plays you run on Friday. A linebacker who fills the same gap in the drill that he fills in your 4-3 learns twice as fast. Write the plan down with times, share it with your assistants before practice, and cut any drill that does not show up in games.

## How to keep contact drills safe

Teach tackling with form and pads before live contact, and keep the head out of every tackle: eyes up, near foot, near shoulder, wrap and roll. When you do go live, match players by size and skill, shorten the distance so collisions happen at controlled speed, limit the reps, and blow the whistle early. Many youth leagues restrict full-contact practice time, so check your league rules and spend most tackling reps on bags, tubes and angle work.

## FAQ

**What are the best American football drills for youth players?**

Start with form tackling on bags, angle pursuit, a simple ball-security drill and position individual work such as stance and start. Youth drills should be short, active and low-contact, with live reps kept brief and closely supervised.

**Is the Oklahoma drill still used?**

Some programs still run it, but many have modified or dropped the traditional full-speed version. A modern Oklahoma drill uses matched players, a short distance, controlled speed, strict form and very few reps, with the coach ready to stop each rep early.

**How long should an American football practice be?**

Most youth practices run 90 minutes to two hours, and high school practices usually two hours to two and a half. Timed periods keep every drill focused and stop the session running long.
